Introducing our Shortlisted Nominees
At this year’s annual CUH Charity Gala Ball we have a series of awards to highlight the phenomenal work of the CUH Community. See below our list of amazing shortlisted candidates!
Members of the public submitted nominations, and shortlisted nominees were selected by a panel of individuals closely involved with CUH and CUH Charity, Peter Horgan (Cork City Council), Claire Kenny (Radiology CUH) and Niall Hartnett (CUH Charity Board).
Charity Person of the Year Award Nominees
Ciara Bowe
Ciara Bowe undertook a month-long campaign where both Ciara and her twin boys walked 253km, across 31 days – approx. 8.2 km (5.1miles) per day to raise money for the Neonatal Ward in CUMH and the Rotunda Hospital. “The month-long campaign featured info-packed daily updates and highlighted the best of energetic fundraising. It was so inspiring to see the passion and drive”.
Fiona O’Keefe and Ger Venner
Fiona O’Keefe and Ger Venner took part in the challenge of cycling from Cork to Paris last May to raise money for Breast Cancer in CUH. The duo put on an informative luncheon on women’s health for the cause which was extremely close to both of their hearts. “Geraldine and Fiona are more than fundraisers – they are ambassadors, and their commitment to saving and changing lives continues to inspire everyone around them”.
Diarmuid Foley
Diarmuid Foley undertook the challenge of climbing Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia in memory of his father Matt. Diarmuid had been in the process of climbing the mountain when he got the news of his dad’s accident and had to return home. “Diarmuid donated nearly €55,000 to the Burns Unit, with the goal of improving the patient day room, so patients have somewhere safe to go.”
Michael McCourt
Michael McCourt began the Climb for Aileen Campaign where every year a group of climbers take on the challenge of Carrauntoohil. “Mick is a selfless, kind, and caring individual whose dedication has transformed personal loss into a legacy of hope. He truly embodies the spirit of community and compassion, and his work deserves the highest recognition”.
Trish Kelleher
Trish Kelleher wrote a children’s book titled “The Giant of Kinsale”, with all proceeds donated to support Play at CUH. This fundraiser was inspired by the birth of her son at CUMH. “Trish’s generosity and creativity are helping to make hospital experiences brighter and more inclusive for children, and her story is a wonderful example of how one person’s passion can make a lasting impact”.
Healthcare Worker of the Year
Mary Coleman & Martha O’Mahony
Mary and Martha work in the Catering Department of the Children’s Emergency Department. Mary and Martha not only provide meals to the Children’s Emergency Department but are an integral part of every child’s care that presents to CUH ED and to the staff of CUH. “Never in my life have I seen someone that does their work with so much love and gusto”. “They are the heart and soul of the department working hard behind the scenes”.
Orna Griffin
Orna is the CNM in the paediatric ward, a critical leadership position. Orna manages staff, coordinates care and maintains the smooth functioning of the ward. “Her leadership, compassion, and tireless advocacy for children and families make her a pillar of strength in the paediatric ward and a source of inspiration throughout the hospital”.
Rhona Cagney
Rhona is a physiotherapy assistant in the Acute Stroke Unit. Rhona contributions go far beyond the boundaries of any job description. “Rhona brings energy and joy during the most challenging times. Stroke rehabilitation can be physically and emotionally draining, but Rhona has a gift for lifting spirits while delivering excellent care.” “In every way, Rhona embodies what it means to be a healthcare hero”.
Jennifer Carroll
Jennifer has tirelessly worked for over a decade at CUH to improve the patient experience on both the acute floor and throughout the hospital. “Leading in the most inspiring and empathetic way, Dr Carroll has provided expert care, compassionate comfort and vision for care for those needing to use services at CUH”.
Aileen O’Brien
Aileen is a nurse on the Renal Ward 4C. Outside of hospital working hours Aileen checks in on the sick and the elderly in her local area of Ballinspittle. “She has a true calling to be a nurse; she excels in her role, and she is appreciated by all for her commitment and dedication to the job”.
