A Cork woman who received care at Cork University Hospital has reached new heights by completing an incredible fundraising challenge in support of the charities that helped her during cancer treatment.

Over the May bank holiday weekend, Gemma Coffey completed the 3 Peaks Challenge, climbing Croagh Patrick, Carrauntoohil and Galtee Mór over three consecutive days. The climbs, totalling more than 2,700 metres, were undertaken to raise funds for CUH Charity (Breeda McGrath Memorial Fund), alongside ARC House and the Irish Cancer Society.

Gemma was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2022 at the age of 27, following a referral prompted by persistent tinnitus. After further investigation, she was referred to specialists at Cork University Hospital, where she began treatment.

Due to the risks involved, surgery was not an option, and Gemma underwent six weeks of radiotherapy followed by 36 weeks of chemotherapy, delivered in cycles to stabilise the tumour and prevent progression.

Support that makes a difference

During her treatment journey, Gemma was supported by the Breeda McGrath Memorial Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients attending the Dunmanway Cancer Services Day Unit. The fund was established in 2018 by the McGrath and Leonard families in memory of Breeda McGrath and continues to support patients and families when they need it most.

Now aged 30, Gemma wanted to give something back.

“Thanks to the incredible support of these three amazing charities, I was able to navigate one of the toughest chapters of my life,” she said. “I wanted to do something positive and meaningful to show my appreciation.”

The idea for the challenge came from Gemma’s partner, James Magner, who encouraged her to take on something out of the ordinary. Completing the climbs over three days was both physically and mentally demanding, making the achievement all the more inspiring.

Giving back to help others

Funds raised through Gemma’s challenge will help the Breeda McGrath Memorial Fund continue to support patients currently undergoing cancer treatment, easing financial pressures and improving patient care and comfort.

Gemma’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of charitable giving and the strength of the CUH community, from patients and families to supporters and fundraisers.
