If you have ever been with a loved one at the end of their life, you know how important that time is.
Medicine can provide pain relief. But patients at the end of life want the comfort of loved ones nearby. But too often, hospitals haven’t been able to provide the calm, quiet, and space for a family to gather in peace. Many patients can be transferred to hospice, where they will have the care and room to visit with family. But some patients deteriorate too rapidly to move. That’s why at CUH, we’ve created an end-of-life suite. This suite offers privacy and comfort for the patients and their families. And since it was built, it has been in constant use.
Privacy and comfort when it’s most needed
The Comfort Care Suite was designed for privacy and quiet. In a hospital, there’s a lot of noise and little privacy. A patient could be in pain while the patient in the next bed is talking loudly. People walk through the halls, having their own conversations. Hospital staff rush in and out, providing care. It’s not an ideal place for people at the end of their lives. The Suite doesn’t look or feel like a hospital. There isn’t a lot of medical equipment to get between the patient and family.
How the Suite is helping, thanks to you
One patient had been in hospital for quite a while. His condition was quickly deteriorating, but because of the Suite, his wife was able to stay with him. They had a full 24 hours together before he passed away. She was with him every moment, and the whole family came. She later came back to tell us just how much that time meant to her.
Saying goodbye to someone you love is never easy. But it doesn’t have to be stressful or clinical. Your generous support means people will spend their last moments in peace with the people they care about.
That’s a precious gift.
About the Comfort Care Suite
The Comfort Care Suite is the first of its kind at CUH. We’re committed to increased comfort for patients who are in their final days and weeks of life and also for their loved ones. A second room is under construction now, thanks to help from kind people like you. And we have more rooms like this one planned.
Comfort Care Suite:
This is a homely sanctuary where healthcare professionals can continue to care for the patient and their loved ones. The patient’s room now has an adjoining private family room with overnight accommodation and a kitchenette, allowing families the best alternative to their own home.
Family Room:
Here, patients and families can relax or talk without the intensity of a hospital setting. This will also be where sensitive conversations can be held by medical nursing staff with patients and families.
The Youth Room:
Here teens and young adults can escape the clinical environment for a while and solace in activities that allow them to recharge and rejuvenate.
Thanks to you, we can continue to give families every opportunity to be together as they navigate their end of life care journey.
